Why we took a break from our day jobs and started Moera

We didn’t set out to build an app—we set out to solve a problem we were living with every day. We searched for solutions, but didn’t find what we were looking for. So we decided to step away from our day jobs and create something different: a way to preserve memories that actually feels manageable, meaningful, and private. We started with a few assumptions and specific problems…
Three assumptions
Our experiences and loved ones are more important than any possession.
Reflecting, without comparing ourselves to others, improves our mental health, as we are reminded of good times, challenges we overcame, and the parts of life that matter most to us.
A picture almost never tells the full story of an experience.
Three problems:
Memory capture: Memories are more than just photos. We wanted a quick and easy way to combine photos with the details that tell the whole story. Albums and time-intensive photo books don’t cut it.
Privacy: So many apps track users and serve up ads. We wanted a way to save our memories, share just what we want to share, and be in control of our data.
Photo overwhelm: As pictures pile up, the collection becomes less valuable, as the gems are buried with so many duds. It starts to feel like “what’s the point of these 1000s of photos.”
Moera builds from those assumptions and solves those problems. The Moera flow–capture, reflect, cleanup, enjoy–rewards you with a private collection of the memories you care about and a photo library that has just the good stuff.
Where we go next
So now that Moera is launched, it’s “done,” right? Hahaha.
We have realized that we will never be “done” making Moera. There will always be improvements and new features to make, and we’re already working on the next iteration. But, we also want to hear from you. Where should Moera go next to help with memory capture and photo overwhelm?
Happy Moment Making!
